About AYAKA SENSEi

Founder of Japanese Mindfulness | Life Coach | Podcast & YouTube Host

Having spent a lifetime "In Transit," I have learned that while the scenery outside constantly changes, the silence within must remain unshakable.

Welcome to your space for transition.

Who am I? To answer that, I must look at the Hazama—the liminal spaces between countries, cultures, and the boundaries of my own identity. My journey of independence began at the age of fourteen, when I left Japan for Australia alone, navigating a new world before I had even finished growing into my own.

For decades, I have lived a life of constant motion, existing between Japan and the world, stillness and movement, tradition and innovation. I have spent my adult life in the "Transit Lounge" of existence—neither fully here nor fully there, but always becoming.

The Professional Journey: 15 Professions Across 4 Continents

To the outside world, I was the ultimate high-achiever. My career has been exceptionally dynamic, spanning over 15 professions across Japan, Australia, the USA (NYC), and Germany.

  • The Stage: From age three, the stage was my home. I performed professionally as a dancer in Japan and Sydney. My dedication eventually led me to New York City, where I undertook full-time dance training under a specialised visa, immersing myself in the world’s most demanding creative arena.

  • The Shift: I secured a full merit scholarship to a private business college in NYC, majoring in Accounting. Yet, despite the achievement, I realised I could not see my future as a CPA like my grandfather. This pivotal "drop-out" moment was my first major act of radical honesty—choosing my internal truth over external prestige.

  • The Essence of Hospitality: In Kyoto, I served as a concierge and managed all inbound reservations for a 4-star hotel. While I mastered the art of the "receiver" of global travellers, I felt a calling to return to the road.

  • The Land: I chose to step back into the world of the traveler, obtaining my national license as a domestic tour conductor. I traversed 40 of Japan’s 47 prefectures and explored over 20 countries, seeing the world through the eyes of a guide while searching for my own destination.

  • The Vessel: One of my most transformative chapters was spent as a ship purser on a floating hotel in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef. Living on a vessel means living in a constant state of "between." It was here I learned that stability doesn’t come from the ground beneath your feet, but from the equilibrium you carry inside.

  • The Blue Ocean: Discovery in Okinawa

When the great pause of 2020 led me back to Japan from Europe, I chose a path of intentional isolation in Okinawa. As a professional diver (PADI Divemaster and National Diver), I spent those years exploring the literal depths of the Pacific, finding a different kind of silence beneath the waves.

Simultaneously, I immersed myself in the wisdom of the Okinawan people—one of the world’s renowned "Blue Zones." I studied the secrets of longevity and vitality, from nutrient-dense traditions to the profound philosophy of Beingness over Doingness. This period was a deep dive into both the mind and the body, discovering that true mindfulness is reflected in our physical vitality and lasting energy.

The Hidden Battle: The Strength of a Survivor

Behind the credentials and the global adventures, I was fighting a silent war. I am a proud survivor of toxic relationships, abuse, harassment, and mistreatment. For years, these experiences manifested as a quiet struggle with PTSD and Depression. I navigated the depths of these shadows while mastering spiritual and scientific practices such as Yoga, meditation, BreathWork, Eastern/Western psychology, NLP, and Positive Psychology.

While these tools were vital, I realised that no matter how many certifications I gathered, I was still trying to "fix" myself through force. I was wearing a "perfect mask," embodying the strength expected of my heritage while crumbling inside. I was a vessel with cracks, and I was missing the very essence of my own roots.

The Discovery: Japanese Mindfulness & Kintsugi

In my darkest moments, I returned to the wisdom of my ancestors. I discovered that true healing wasn't about "fixing" a broken version of myself—it was about Kintsugi: the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold.

I realised that the "Mindfulness" the West was practising was only half the story. The missing pieces were the uniquely Japanese concepts of Kubari (the distribution of energy) and the spirituality of the everyday such as:

Kokoro-zukai: The intentional way we spend our heart.

Ki-zukai: Harmonizing our energy with the space and others.

Kokoro-kubari: Attentiveness to the invisible, smallest details.

Ki-kubari: The wisdom of anticipation and presence.

Kokoro-gamae: Our mental readiness and stance toward life.

The Heritage: The SENSEi Lineage

The title "SENSEi" is more than a brand; it is my DNA. I am a descendant of the Buke (Samurai class) and was born into a long lineage of masters and educators:

The Great-Grandmother (The Matriarch): Living to the age of 102, she was the silent anchor of our family, embodying the longevity and resilience that I now study in the Blue Zones.

The Grandfather (The Master of Precision): A distinguished CPA and recipient of the Medal with Yellow Ribbon from the Japanese Emperor. He modeled the ultimate discipline of the "Professional Sensei."

The Grandfather (The Eternal Student): A lifelong learner and polyglot who maintained a mindful, ritualistic lifestyle well into his later years.

The Grandmother (The Traditional Anchor): She modeled the profound depth of Shitatakasa (True Strength)

—an unbreakable core that remains steady regardless of the storm.

The Grandmother (The Visionary Educator): A pioneer who founded her own school, mentoring students on International Society and global perspectives, alongside the English language, planting the seeds of my own bilingual soul.

The Father (The Mindful Consultant): A tax specialist and consulting business owner. Having attended Buddhist school, his daily demonstration of a peaceful, quiet mind has been one of my greatest inspirations.

The Mother (The Heart of the Lineage): The most optimistic and loving person in my life. A former Kindergarten teacher turned doll-making Sensei and salon owner, she is the ultimate embodiment of Kokoro-zukai—the loving way we spend our heart on our craft and our people.

A Message from AYAKA: The Wisdom of Kokoro

My scars are not my shame; they are my credentials. As a "sensitive introvert,"

I have learned that you can be both quiet and powerful.

To work with me is to understand Kokoro (心). In the West, "mind" and "heart" are often separated.

In Japan, Kokoro is the unified centre of your intellect, spirit, and emotion.

When life leaves us fragmented, my role is to help you rewire that centre through the lens of Japanese aesthetics and modern science.

An Invitation to Connect: I choose to work with a small number of authentic, like-minded, and high-vibe individuals from around the world.

I don't believe in pressure; I believe in resonance.

If you feel a quiet pull toward this journey, I invite you to a 60-minute discovery session.

This is a dedicated hour of stillness—a chance to sit together in the "in-between" and see if our energies align for your own Kintsugi process.
